Interesting Facts
• Sempervivum are commonly called Hens and Chicks because mature “hen” rosettes produce smaller “chicks” around themselves.
• The name Sempervivum means “always living,” reflecting their famously resilient nature.
• Foliage can develop shades of green, red, burgundy, bronze, purple, and silver, often changing with the seasons.
• Their natural mountain habitats help explain their impressive tolerance for cold and exposed conditions.
• Mature rosettes produce tall stalks of star-shaped flowers.
• Individual rosettes are monocarpic, flowering once before dying while surrounding offsets continue the colony.
• Houseleeks have a long history of cultivation around European homes, walls, roofs, and gardens.
• Some Sempervivum species also have histories of traditional topical use for minor skin concerns, although they are cultivated today primarily as ornamental succulents.
