Living Stones. Split Forms. Flowers Bigger Than the Plant.

Grow one of South Africa’s most unusual living-stone succulents from seed. This Pleiospilos Species Seed Mix produces chunky, stone-like plants with thick paired leaves, distinctive speckling, dramatic fissures, and surprisingly large flowers. Commonly called “split rocks,” Pleiospilos are masters of botanical mimicry and prized by collectors for looking almost more like cracked stones than living plants.

Family: Aizoaceae

Genus: Pleiospilos

Native Range: South Africa

Growth Habit: Compact, stone-like paired-leaf succulent

Light: Bright light to full sun as established

Water: Very low once established; strongly seasonal

Growing Tips

• Use an extremely well-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix

• Provide bright, filtered light for young seedlings

• Gradually introduce stronger light as plants establish

• Maintain gentle moisture during early seedling growth

• Water very sparingly and seasonally once plants mature

• Allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between established-plant waterings

• Avoid prolonged humidity and excess moisture

• Overwatering can cause unnatural swelling, splitting, and rot

• Follow the plant's growth and leaf-replacement cycle rather than watering on a fixed schedule

Planting Tips

• Surface sow on a fine, mineral-rich seed-starting mix

• Do not bury seeds deeply; cover only very lightly if needed

• Provide warmth and gentle humidity during germination

• Keep the substrate lightly and consistently moist during early germination, but never waterlogged

• Gradually increase ventilation as seedlings establish

• Slowly transition seedlings to brighter light and drier conditions

• Handle young plants carefully while their root systems develop

Interesting Facts

• Pleiospilos are commonly called “split rocks” because their thick paired leaves and deep central fissure can resemble cracked stones.

• They belong to the extraordinary mesemb or “living stone” group of succulents adapted to blend into rocky environments.

• Their leaves often display intricate dots, speckles, and mottled patterns, strengthening their stone-like camouflage.

• The name Pleiospilos comes from Greek roots meaning approximately “many spots,” referring to the characteristic spotting across the leaves.

• Plants generally produce new opposing leaf pairs from the central fissure, while older leaves gradually shrivel as their stored resources are recycled into new growth.

• Mature plants can produce remarkably large daisy-like flowers, creating a dramatic contrast with their compact stone-like bodies.

• Depending on the species, flowers may display brilliant yellow, gold, orange, or related tones.

• Their rock mimicry is more than an unusual appearance—it reflects adaptation to harsh, exposed South African environments.

• Their combination of camouflage, geometric leaf pairs, speckled coloration, seasonal transformation, and oversized flowers gives Pleiospilos exceptional collector appeal.
