Living Stones. Impossible Patterns. Succulents Designed to Disappear.

This Lithops Species Seed Mix produces extraordinary miniature succulents famous for their pebble-like appearance, intricate markings, and remarkable natural camouflage. Native to southern Africa, these tiny living stones develop paired leaves patterned with windows, dots, lines, and marbling that help them blend into the surrounding landscape.

Highly collectible and endlessly variable, Lithops are perfect for growers who appreciate strange plants, miniature forms, and living-stone collections.

Family: Aizoaceae

Genus: Lithops

Native Range: Southern Africa

Growth Habit: Miniature stone-like succulent

Light: Bright light to full sun

Water: Very low; seasonal

Plant Care

• Grow in a gritty, mineral-rich, exceptionally fast-draining mix

• Provide abundant bright light, gradually acclimating plants to stronger sun

• Water very carefully and follow seasonal growth patterns

• Allow the substrate to dry thoroughly between appropriate waterings

• Avoid prolonged moisture or soggy soil at all times

• During leaf replacement, old leaves naturally shrivel as the new pair absorbs their stored moisture

• Avoid routine watering while new leaves are consuming the old pair

• Reduce or withhold water during appropriate dormant periods

• Provide excellent airflow

Germination Instructions

• Surface sow on a fine, gritty mineral mix

• Do not bury the tiny seeds

• Keep lightly and consistently moist during germination

• Provide bright, filtered light

• Gentle humidity can help maintain moisture while seeds germinate

• Provide good airflow

• Protect tiny seedlings from intense direct sun

• Do not allow newly germinated seedlings to completely dry out

• Gradually reduce humidity and watering as seedlings establish

• Avoid overwatering at every stage

Interesting Facts

• Lithops are called living stones because their bodies closely resemble the rocks and pebbles surrounding them.

• Their camouflage helps make the plants less noticeable to herbivores in their natural habitat.

• The name Lithops comes from Greek words referring to their stone-like appearance.

• Each plant consists primarily of a pair of thick, fused leaves separated by a central fissure.

• Their upper surfaces can display intricate windows, dots, channels, lines, islands, and marbled patterns.

• Plants may develop shades of gray, green, cream, tan, brown, orange, red, pink, and purple.

• Much of the plant remains at or below soil level, leaving its patterned upper surface exposed.

• New leaves emerge from between the old pair, which gradually shrivels away.

• Mature plants can produce surprisingly large white or yellow daisy-like flowers.

• Lithops are cultivated primarily as ornamental collector succulents and have no major established medicinal use.

Please Note

This is a mixed Lithops species seed assortment. Species, quantities, body shape, coloration, markings, mature size, flowers, seasonal growth patterns, and growth rates may vary. Specific species and germination results are not guaranteed.

Lithops require extremely careful, seasonal watering. Their needs differ from many common succulents, and excessive moisture is one of the greatest risks to established plants.
