Tiny Buttons. Part pebble. Part button. Somehow a plant.

This Conophytum Species Seed Mix produces miniature paired-leaf succulents prized for their jewel-like forms, intricate markings, and remarkable resemblance to colorful pebbles. Native to southern Africa, these tiny living stones form rounded bodies that can gradually develop into beautiful clusters.

Many species produce surprisingly bright flowers during their autumn growing season, making Conophytum a favorite among mesemb and living-stone collectors.

Plant Care

• Grow in a gritty, mineral-rich mesemb mix with excellent drainage

• Reduce or withhold most water during summer dormancy

• Avoid overwatering dormant plants

• Old leaves may dry into a papery sheath around new growth—this is normal

• Provide bright, airy conditions and good airflow

Germination Instructions

• Surface sow on a fine, mineral-rich mesemb mix

• Do not bury the tiny seeds deeply

• Keep lightly and consistently moist during germination

• Provide mild temperatures and bright, filtered light

• Maintain gentle humidity with good airflow

• Protect seedlings from intense direct sun

• Do not allow newly germinated seedlings to completely dry out

• Gradually reduce humidity as seedlings establish

Interesting Facts

• Each Conophytum body is formed from a pair of highly fused succulent leaves.

• Often called living pebbles or marble buttons, their rounded bodies can resemble tiny stones scattered across the soil.

• Plants may develop beautiful dots, lines, windows, marbling, and jewel-like coloration.

• Many species gradually divide to form colorful clusters containing numerous tiny bodies.

• Their stone-like appearance provides natural camouflage in rocky habitats.

• Many Conophytum become active as temperatures cool and can produce brilliant autumn flowers in shades of white, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and magenta.

• During dormancy, old leaves can form a protective papery covering around the developing new body.

• Their tiny size, enormous variation, and intricate patterns make them favorites among specialist mesemb collectors.
